SqE8ty6R^y7 (Glitch Code) (2022)
Performances with 35mm cameraless film animation and projection by Jennell Stafford.
Hancher Auditorium, Iowa City, IA. University of Grad Iowa Department of Dance.

Sqe8ty6R^y7 (glitch code) was devised with 17 UI Department of Dance students through a highly collaborative and experimental process. Both the choreography and the painted/scratched film material were generated through a hands-on, co-creative process involving the entire cast. Our research looked at how we physicalize concepts of analog mechanics vs digital glitches through humanizing or dehumanizing characterizations. In addition to working closely with three musical tracks by the highly potent five-piece jazz ensemble Koma Saxo, we also drew inspiration from mid-century animators Norman McLaren, Harry Smith; Legacy Russel's "Glitch Feminism: A Manifesto"; and youtube videos of robots dancing.
