KLEIN TECHNIQUE™ STRETCH AND PLACEMENT
at the Dance Hub Santa Barbara

Klein Technique™ is a process through which the body is analyzed and understood to improve and further movement potential. It is a movement education and re-education that can be an underpinning for all movement genres, improvisations, athletics, and for the general health of the body in everyday movement. This workshop will introduce a Klein Technique™ Stretch and Placement class and will progress towards movement phrases that integrate concepts of Klein Technique™ into bigger dancing. Register here

These classes will consider the possibilities of the body and its position in space through set movement structures and improvised scores that challenge our senses. This workshop will serve as an in-depth introduction to Klein Technique™ Stretch and Placement. Klein Technique™ is a somatic practice founded by Susan Klein. It works to re-educate the body by utilizing the forces of gravity to leverage off the earth to create powerful and efficient movement. Stretch and Placement class is focused on letting go of the superficial muscles in order to connect the bones into the floor accessing greater efficiency, power and articulation. Although Klein Technique™ was developed by a dancer for dancers, it is a technique that works for everybody, from the virtuosic dancer to the non-dancer. This workshop will begin with a Klein Technique™ Stretch and Placement class focused on letting go of the superficial muscles in order to connect the bones into the floor accessing greater efficiency, power and articulation. Following this we will explore ideas of space and quality through a class format based exercises from the Jooss-Leeder method. Both of these practices have roots in the work of Rudolf Laban. Throughout the workshop we will test and question how these forms can be useful in contemporary training and creative practice.

This workshop is a unique opportunity to study Klein Technique™ with Susan Klein, the founder of Klein Technique™ in the contexts of its lineage, German Modern Dance. We will start each day with a class in Klein Technique™ taught by Susan Klein and progress into a movement exploration of the German Modern Dance/Tanztheater traditions from Kurt Jooss to Pina Bausch taught by Stephanie Miracle. The three days will be steeped in Klein Technique™ practice and theory and will offer an experience of the Jooss-Leeder method and movement concepts that Stephanie Miracle has been researching through a Fulbright grant at Folkwang Uni and while dancing with the FTS Company.
